KASU Lecturers Suspend Strike After Kaduna Approves Salary Deal

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University chapter, has suspended its strike following the approval of a salary agreement by the Kaduna State Government.

The suspension took effect from 12:01am on Friday, September 18, 2026, after the union’s congress unanimously accepted approvals granted by the state government, KASU Governing Council and university management.

The union’s decision followed Governor Uba Sani’s approval for the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement for academic staff at the university.

The approved agreement will take effect from October 2026 and covers the revised Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and other applicable salary adjustments and allowances.

The university’s Governing Council and management also approved the payment of nine months’ accrued arrears covering January to September 2026.

KASU-ASUU Chairman Abubakar Abdullahi and Secretary Silas Bakut announced the suspension after the union’s congress meeting on Thursday.

They said the congress considered the approvals and unanimously resolved to suspend the industrial action, which had disrupted academic activities at the institution.

The union described the approvals as significant steps towards restoring stability and industrial harmony at the university.

It also said implementation of the agreement would improve staff welfare, enhance staff retention and boost productivity among academic employees.

The Kaduna State Government had earlier constituted a nine-member Government-KASU/ASUU Negotiation Committee to examine the union’s demands and develop a sustainable framework for resolving them.

The government had also approved a one-off N300 million Earned Academic Allowance payment for KASU academic staff as part of efforts to address accumulated entitlements.

Following the suspension, academic activities are expected to resume at KASU, although the union will monitor implementation of the agreements reached with the government and university authorities.

The lecturers thanked Governor Sani, the negotiation team, the Governing Council and university management for their roles in resolving the dispute.

The union said the approach adopted during the negotiations demonstrated respect for due process, constructive engagement and industrial relations.

The suspension ends the latest industrial action by KASU-ASUU, while implementation of the agreed salary package and payment of arrears will now be closely monitored by the union.
