Kano Sets Up Committee To Tackle Diphtheria Outbreak

The Kano State Government has established a committee to coordinate efforts to contain a diphtheria outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease across the state.

The committee is expected to strengthen disease surveillance, coordinate medical interventions and support public health authorities in identifying and responding quickly to suspected cases.

The development comes amid concerns over the spread of diphtheria, a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the throat and respiratory system and can become life-threatening without timely treatment.

The state government said the committee would work with relevant health institutions and development partners to improve case detection, treatment and prevention measures.

Health officials are expected to monitor communities for suspected infections, ensure that affected patients receive appropriate medical care and strengthen contact tracing around confirmed cases.

The response will also involve public awareness activities aimed at educating residents about symptoms, transmission and the importance of seeking medical attention promptly.

Diphtheria can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact with an infected person. Symptoms may include sore throat, fever, weakness, swollen neck and difficulty breathing.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective methods of preventing diphtheria, particularly among children who are at greater risk of severe disease.

The committee is therefore expected to support efforts to identify unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children and strengthen routine immunisation activities in affected communities.

Health authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report people showing symptoms associated with diphtheria to the nearest health facility.

Parents and caregivers have also been encouraged to ensure that children receive recommended routine vaccinations and complete their immunisation schedules.

The state government said the outbreak response would require cooperation among government agencies, healthcare workers, traditional institutions, community leaders and residents.

Healthcare facilities are expected to maintain heightened surveillance and promptly report suspected cases to health authorities to facilitate rapid investigation and treatment.

The committee will also monitor the availability of medicines and other essential supplies required to manage patients and support healthcare workers involved in the response.
