Jigawa Gov Appoints Sani 17th Emir of Gumel

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel Emirate, three days after the death of his father, the late Emir Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.

The appointment was announced on Sunday by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Dutse, the state capital.

According to the announcement, the governor approved Sani’s appointment following consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council and the kingmakers, in accordance with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.

The new emir succeeds his father, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after a 46-year reign.

The appointment brings continuity to the traditional institution in Gumel and follows the conclusion of the selection process by the relevant traditional authorities.

Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani is the first son of the late emir. His emergence means the traditional leadership of the historic Gumel Emirate remains within the same royal family following the death of the former monarch.

The state government said the selection process was conducted in consultation with the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.

Governor Namadi commended the kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Nasoro, for their role in the selection process and for ensuring that the appointment was conducted in line with the applicable law.

The governor also congratulated the new emir and expressed confidence that he would build on the legacy of his late father while providing effective traditional leadership to the people of Gumel Emirate.

The late Emir Ahmed Muhammad Sani II was widely associated with a long period of leadership in the emirate, having occupied the throne for 46 years before his death.

His successor now assumes responsibility for the traditional institution at a time when traditional rulers continue to play important roles in community development, peacebuilding and mediation across Jigawa State.

The new emir is expected to receive the formal installation and begin his responsibilities following the state government’s approval.

The appointment has also brought an end to uncertainty over succession following the death of the former monarch and ensures that Gumel Emirate has a recognised traditional ruler only days after the vacancy occurred.

With the appointment approved, attention will now turn to the formal coronation and the new emir’s first engagements with traditional leaders, government officials and residents of the emirate.
