Jigawa Assembly Receives Constitution Amendment Bill, Pledges Timely Action

The Jigawa State House of Assembly has received the Constitution Amendment Bill transmitted by the National Assembly and pledged to complete its consideration within the stipulated timeframe.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Haruna Dangyatim, disclosed this on Friday during an interactive session with journalists at the Assembly Complex in Dutse.

Dangyatim said the bill was transmitted to state Houses of Assembly on September 16 for consideration, adding that Jigawa would complete the legislative process before the end of the month.

“We have received the Constitution Amendment Bill from the National Assembly, and I want to assure you that we will do the needful before the deadline given to all state assemblies,” he said.

He said the Assembly had constituted a committee to examine the proposed amendments and make recommendations that reflected the interests of the people of Jigawa State.

The Speaker described the amendment process as important to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and addressing areas requiring clarification in the 1999 Constitution.

He added that the Assembly would consult traditional rulers, civil society organisations and professional bodies to obtain their views before reaching a final decision.

Dangyatim assured that transparency and the interests of Jigawa State and Nigeria would guide the lawmakers’ consideration of the bill.

The National Assembly had earlier transmitted the State Police Services Bill to the 36 state Houses of Assembly, explaining that the state legislatures’ approval was required under Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution.

The National Assembly has said the 30-day period given to state assemblies is an administrative timeframe rather than a constitutional deadline.
