Jakirovic Reveals Why Hull City Chased Iroegbunam For Two Months
Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has praised Nigerian-eligible midfielder Tim Iroegbunam and explained that the club pursued him for two months because of his Premier League experience.
Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has revealed that the club spent two months pursuing midfielder Tim Iroegbunam before completing his transfer from Everton.
Iroegbunam joined the newly promoted Championship side before the close of the summer transfer window after beginning the season with Everton.
The 23-year-old midfielder featured for Everton in their second league fixture against Bournemouth before completing his move to Hull City.
However, an injury delayed his debut for the Tigers following the transfer.
He eventually made his first appearance for Hull City in their 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, coming on as a second-half substitute for Matt Crooks in the 69th minute.
Speaking after the match, Jakirovic praised Iroegbunam’s quality and explained why the club had been determined to sign him.
“Tim is a very good player. We knew from day one. We chased him for two months,” Jakirovic said.
The Hull City manager added that Iroegbunam’s experience in the Premier League was an important factor in the club’s decision to pursue him.
He said the midfielder would provide valuable support to the team because of his experience playing at the highest level of English football.
Iroegbunam attracted Hull City’s interest after an impressive 2025/26 campaign with Everton, during which he provided three assists in 31 league appearances.
The former Aston Villa midfielder is now expected to play an important role as Hull City compete in the Championship following their promotion.
