'It Was Difficult' – Eric Chelle Appraises Oputa, Igboke, and Domestic Talents Following Super Eagles Bows

Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has provided an honest assessment of Enugu Rangers duo Chibueze Oputa and Obinna Igboke, alongside other Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) stars, following their international debuts.

The domestic league contingent was given an opportunity to impress as Nigeria kicked off their 2026 Unity Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe at London's Valley Stadium.

Acknowledging the immense step up from club football to the international stage, Chelle admitted that the transition is never straightforward for home-based players, particularly given the limited time available to adapt to his tactical demands.

The Franco-Malian tactician noted that while the newcomers showed glimpses of their potential, they found the pace and physical intensity of the encounter highly demanding. He emphasized that adjusting to the national team setup requires immense mental fortitude and rapid tactical maturity, given they only had a couple of training sessions to prepare.

Despite pointing out the challenges they faced, Chelle praised the debutants for their work ethic and willingness to learn. He stressed that the door remains open for NPFL talent, but reiterated his ultimatum that consistency, aggression, and an immediate understanding of his tactical framework are non-negotiable for anyone wishing to cement a regular place in the squad.
