‘It Felt Like a Fresh Start’ — Carrick Reacts to Man United’s Draw at Leeds
Michael Carrick praises Manchester United’s commitment after a 1-1 draw at Leeds, but admits his side must improve.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has described his side’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United as a “fresh start”, expressing confidence that the team can recover from its difficult run of results.
United took a point from Sunday’s Premier League encounter at Elland Road after Bryan Mbeumo’s first-half opener was cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin shortly after the interval.
Mbeumo put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute, finishing a move created by Youri Tielemans. Leeds responded six minutes into the second half when Calvert-Lewin scored from close range following a corner.
The result extended United’s winless run to six matches across all competitions, increasing pressure on Carrick as the club struggles to find consistency.
Speaking after the match, Carrick said he was encouraged by the determination and togetherness shown by his players, particularly after a difficult week that included a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.
“It felt like a bit of a fresh start today, if I’m honest,” Carrick said, adding that the team had accepted its situation and was working to address its problems.
He praised the players for taking responsibility and responding positively to discussions ahead of the match, noting that the intensity of the rivalry made the contest particularly demanding.
Carrick, however, cautioned against celebrating the result, acknowledging that United had not secured the victory they needed.
The manager said the team had shown signs of improvement in its organisation and collective effort, while insisting that sustained progress would depend on maintaining those standards.
United’s struggles have been reflected in their league campaign, with the club collecting seven points from its first seven Premier League matches and winning only once during that period.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke, meanwhile, said his team had been the more dominant side for significant periods but regretted failing to convert its opportunities into a victory.
The draw leaves both clubs with work to do as they seek greater consistency in the league. United will now turn their attention to their next fixture as Carrick looks to translate the encouraging aspects of the Leeds performance into wins.
