Inter Milan, Italy Icon Mazzola Dies Aged 83

Former Inter Milan and Italy forward Sandro Mazzola has died at the age of 83, with the club confirming his death.

Mazzola spent his entire 17-year professional playing career at Inter, becoming a defining figure of Inter’s golden era under Helenio Herrera.

The attacking midfielder made 565 appearances for Inter and scored 158 goals, helping the Nerazzurri win four Serie A titles and back-to-back European Cups in 1964 and 1965.

His most memorable performances included the 1964 European Cup final against Real Madrid, when he scored twice in Inter’s 3-1 victory.

Mazzola also played a major role for Italy. He earned 70 international caps, scoring 22 goals, and was part of the team that won the 1968 European Championship.

Two years later, he featured in Italy’s run to the 1970 World Cup final in Mexico, where the Azzurri lost 4-1 to Brazil’s side led by Pele.

Mazzola’s international career was also marked by the famous debate over his partnership with AC Milan great Gianni Rivera. Italy coach Ferruccio Valcareggi alternated the two players during the 1970 World Cup.

In 1971, Mazzola finished second behind Johan Cruyff in the Ballon d’Or voting, underlining his status among the leading players of his generation.

His footballing career was shaped by personal tragedy. Mazzola was only six when his father, Valentino Mazzola, the captain of the legendary Grande Torino side, died in the 1949 Superga air disaster.

After retiring from playing in 1977, Mazzola remained involved in football, later taking an executive role at Inter and serving as sporting director at Torino.

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta paid tribute to Mazzola, describing him as an inseparable part of the club’s history and saying his memory would remain forever.

Inter also announced a minute’s silence before matches in Italy this weekend in honour of the captain and national team icon.

Mazzola’s death marks the loss of a recognisable figure from Inter’s historic 1960s side, whose achievements helped establish the club among Europe’s elite.
