Injury Crisis Hits Eagles Stars In Europe
Six Super Eagles stars are sidelined with injuries, threatening their club progress and Nigeria’s September international campaign.
The Super Eagles are facing an injury crisis in Europe, with six Nigerian players sidelined as clubs settle into the new season and Nigeria prepares for September matches.
Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche is the biggest concern after undergoing surgery for a serious right-knee injury suffered in a pre-season friendly against Monaco on August 6. The 23-year-old sustained multiple ligament and meniscus tears following a tackle and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Uche will also miss Nigeria’s September qualifying double-header and is likely to be unavailable for the tournament finals, making his absence a significant blow to Eric Chelle.
Valencia striker Sadiq Umar has also been sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury following the club’s 3-1 victory over Deportivo de La Coruña. The 29-year-old scored and played the full 90 minutes before reporting for training with a limp. Valencia have started treatment and rehabilitation but have not provided a definite return date, leaving his availability for Nigeria uncertain.
Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru suffered a tear in his right thigh during the 1-0 win over Bologna. He is expected to be out for at least three weeks, potentially missing several Serie A fixtures and putting his Nigeria involvement in doubt.
Porto defender Zaidu Sanusi faces about two months on the sidelines after suffering a right adductor injury during a 3-0 victory over Académico de Viseu. The 29-year-old had started every league minute before the setback and will miss Nigeria’s September qualifiers.
Marseille midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi picked up a knee injury in a 2-0 defeat to Monaco. The 23-year-old is yet to secure a regular starting position under Bruno Genesio, and the setback could further delay his progress. His national team availability remains a lesser concern because he only made his Super Eagles debut this year.
Amedspor winger Yira Sor completes the list after suffering a Grade 2B hamstring injury in his left biceps femoris. The 26-year-old is expected to miss six weeks, shortly after joining from Genk for €3 million.
The injuries have created selection concerns for Chelle, with several players potentially unavailable as Nigeria’s September fixtures approach.
