INEC to Unveil 2027 Election Preparations as 100-Day Countdown Begins

The Independent National Electoral Commission is set to provide Nigerians with an update on its preparations for the 2027 general elections as the country enters the 100-day countdown to the polls.

The commission is expected to highlight key activities already completed and outline remaining preparations ahead of the elections, including voter registration, electoral logistics, technology deployment and the publication of relevant election timetables.

The 2027 general elections are scheduled to take place in February, with Nigerians expected to elect a President and members of the National Assembly before the governorship and state assembly elections later in the electoral cycle.

INEC has continued preparations for the elections amid growing political activities across the country. Political parties have also intensified consultations and internal processes ahead of the nomination of candidates for the various positions.

One of the major areas of focus for the commission is the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which is aimed at giving eligible Nigerians who are not yet registered an opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.

INEC has also continued efforts to clean up the voter register and improve the accuracy of electoral data ahead of the polls.

The commission is expected to use the countdown period to strengthen coordination with political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

Technology is also expected to remain central to the 2027 elections, particularly the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and electronic transmission of election results, subject to the legal and operational framework approved for the polls.

INEC has repeatedly urged Nigerians to participate in the electoral process and avoid activities capable of undermining peaceful elections.

The commission is also expected to remind political parties and candidates of their responsibilities under the Electoral Act, particularly regarding campaign conduct, compliance with electoral regulations and respect for the rights of voters.

As the 100-day countdown begins, attention is increasingly shifting from political calculations to the practical arrangements required to deliver credible and peaceful elections.

INEC’s forthcoming briefing is expected to provide further clarity on the commission’s level of preparedness and the key milestones Nigerians should watch as the 2027 election date approaches.
