I’m Coming to Build — Oyedeji Declares NBBF Presidential Bid
Olumide Oyedeji has declared his NBBF presidential bid, promising to rebuild, unite and reposition Nigerian basketball.
Former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji has formally declared his intention to contest the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, promising to rebuild, reunite and reposition Nigerian basketball.
Oyedeji made the declaration at a press conference in Lagos on Monday after months of consultations and engagements with stakeholders across the basketball community.
The former NBA player said his decision was driven by a desire to serve the sport rather than personal ambition, insisting that his focus would be on creating a sustainable system that benefits players, coaches, officials, stakeholders and corporate partners.
“I am not coming to take from basketball; I am coming to build a legacy that will outlive us all,” Oyedeji said.
The former national team captain brings more than three decades of experience as a player, club owner, administrator and philanthropist. He served on the FIBA Players Commission from 2014 to 2019 and was elected as the South-West representative on the NBBF board in 2022.
He is also the incumbent president of the Nigeria Olympians Association, third vice president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the first African to serve as Secretary General of the World Olympians Association.
Oyedeji described Nigerian basketball as being at a defining moment, saying the country has the talent and human resources to compete successfully but needs stronger structures, investment and leadership.
His proposed administration would focus on revitalising domestic leagues, improving player welfare, strengthening governance and developing sustainable infrastructure.
He also pledged to restore corporate confidence through greater accountability and attract investment through international partnerships.
Player welfare would be a major priority, with Oyedeji promising improved professional standards, timely payment of allowances, comprehensive insurance coverage and clearer career pathways for athletes.
He further said his administration would invest in grassroots development and youth programmes while strengthening opportunities for players and other stakeholders across the basketball ecosystem.
The NBBF election is scheduled to hold in Lagos on October 15, with Oyedeji joining other candidates seeking to lead the federation.
Oyedeji said his ambition goes beyond winning the election, stressing that his ultimate goal is to leave Nigerian basketball stronger and better positioned for future generations.
