‘I’ll Leave My Wife If She Becomes President and Governs Like Tinubu’ — Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he would leave his wife if she became president and governed Nigeria in the same way he believes President Bola Tinubu is governing the country.

Amaechi made the remark during an interview with Rapid TV, where he urged Nigerians to put aside religious, ethnic and political affiliations when assessing the performance of political leaders ahead of the 2027 general election.

He said personal relationships should not prevent people from speaking against poor leadership, even when the person involved is someone close to them.

“Today, the closest person in my life is my wife, not my children. So tomorrow, if my wife becomes president and is doing what Tinubu is doing, I’ll be mad to follow my wife, despite my emotional attachment to her. It’s either she changes, or I leave her,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor called on Nigerians to reject political loyalty based solely on personal, religious or ethnic considerations and instead assess the policies and performance of those seeking public office.

Amaechi argued that Nigerians had experienced the Tinubu administration and should consider giving the opposition an opportunity to govern.

“There’s a difference between Tinubu’s team and our team. They have been tested, so you know that the next four years you will die. We have not been tested, so give us a chance,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that his own record in public office could be assessed, having served as governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and later as Minister of Transportation.

He challenged Nigerians to examine projects delivered during his tenure as governor, insisting that his record was open to public scrutiny.

“I was once a governor. Rivers State is there, anybody can go and verify. You can do your referendum,” he said.

Amaechi also criticised the Tinubu administration, arguing that Nigerians should not expect different outcomes if they continue to support leadership they consider unsuccessful.

He further urged voters to participate actively in the 2027 elections and remain vigilant against electoral malpractice.

His comments come amid growing political activity among opposition parties, including the ADC, as political figures begin positioning themselves ahead of the next presidential election.
