‘His Majesty Cannot Change His Mind On Polygamy’ — Olori Atuwatse III
Olori Atuwatse III says the Olu of Warri cannot change his mind on polygamy, citing their shared understanding.
Olori Atuwatse III, wife of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has spoken about her husband’s position on polygamy and the nature of their marriage.
The queen made the comments while discussing her family, marriage and responsibilities as the wife of the traditional ruler.
According to her, the Olu of Warri had been clear about his position on polygamy, adding that she understood his perspective and the traditional responsibilities attached to his position.
She said the monarch could not simply change his mind on the matter because his position had been based on his understanding of tradition and his role as the Olu of Warri.
Olori Atuwatse III, who married the monarch in 2021, said their relationship was built on communication, mutual understanding and shared values.
She explained that their marriage had also required both of them to understand the demands that came with being members of the royal family.
The queen has remained active in charitable and social initiatives, particularly those focused on women, children, education and community development.
Her comments on polygamy come amid public interest in the personal lives of traditional rulers, whose marriages and family structures often attract considerable attention because of their cultural and historical significance.
The Olu of Warri is the traditional ruler of the Itsekiri people in Delta State. Ogiame Atuwatse III ascended the throne in 2021 following his coronation in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Since his emergence as monarch, the Olu has been involved in initiatives focused on economic development, cultural preservation and strengthening the relationship between the Warri Kingdom and wider society.
Olori Atuwatse III has also represented the royal family at several public and humanitarian engagements.
While discussing their marriage, she stressed the importance of understanding the responsibilities and expectations that come with being married to a traditional ruler.
Her remarks have renewed public discussion about marriage traditions among royal families and the differences between contemporary marital expectations and traditional institutions.
The queen’s comments reflect her personal perspective on her marriage and her understanding of the position held by her husband as the Olu of Warri.
