Heavyweight Champion Hrgovic Urges Joshua to Retire
Croatian heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic has urged Anthony Joshua to retire after his next fight, questioning the British boxer’s recent performance ahead of his anticipated December showdown with Tyson Fury.
International Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic has advised former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua to consider retiring from professional boxing, citing concerns over his performance in his recent fight.
Hrgovic made the remarks during an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, saying he was unimpressed by Joshua’s display against Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga in July.
Joshua was knocked down twice during the opening round before recovering to stop Prenga in the second round. Although he secured the victory, the difficult start prompted Hrgovic to question whether the British boxer should continue his career.
“He is done, he shouldn’t be fighting anymore, but he wants to do one more fight,” Hrgovic said, suggesting that the financial rewards of another bout could be influencing Joshua’s decision to remain active.
The Croatian champion said he felt sorry for Joshua, noting that the former Olympic gold medallist had reportedly made significant changes to his training arrangements and focused on boxing ahead of the Prenga contest.
Hrgovic also questioned the impact of Joshua’s recent coaching changes, arguing that his struggles in the ring could not necessarily be resolved by working with another trainer.
He described boxing as a dangerous sport and cautioned that fighters needed to recognise when they could no longer compete safely at the highest level.
Joshua’s victory over Prenga followed his knockout win against American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in December 2025. Before those victories, he suffered a fifth-round knockout defeat to fellow British heavyweight Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
The 36-year-old is now preparing for a highly anticipated contest against former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, scheduled for December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Joshua has also reunited with trainer Ben Davison as he prepares for the bout, which is expected to attract considerable international attention.
Hrgovic believes the upcoming contest could be one of Joshua’s final appearances in the ring, although the British boxer has not announced any plans to retire.
The Croatian’s comments add to the scrutiny surrounding Joshua’s future as he attempts to re-establish himself among the leading contenders in the heavyweight division.
