Great Ife Reunion Chicago 2026: A Remarkable Homecoming and Global Call to Service

The Great Ife Alumni Reunion Chicago 2026 has ended, but the friendships renewed, conversations held and commitments made during the three-day gathering are expected to continue to shape engagement with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, for years to come.

Held from September 4 to 6, 2026, the Reunion brought together Great Ife alumni, University officials and distinguished guests from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Nigeria and other parts of the world.

The official communiqué described the gathering not as a routine visit by University officials, but as a genuine homecoming, one that combined fellowship and nostalgia with serious discussions about the future of the institution.

A Distinguished Global Gathering

The calibre of personalities at the Reunion reflected the global character of the Great Ife family.

Among those present were Chief Dele Momodu; Rt. Hon. Adejare Bello, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council; Professor Wande Abimbola and his wife; Professor Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor; and Professor Sola Aderounmu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

The alumni community was also strongly represented by Great Ife North America, including Dr. Ayodeji Owoyomi, Immediate Past President of Great Ife North America; Great Adeolu Esho; and fellow Great Ife alumni, whose participation contributed to the strength and global character of the gathering.

Also recognised were Great (Dr.) Adekunle Adewole, President of the UK Chapter; Great Sunday Asha, President of the Canada Chapter; Great Ismail Longe, former Chairman of the Illinois Chapter; and Great Ayo Adelugba, Global Reunion Coordinator, whose mobilisation efforts contributed significantly to bringing alumni together.

Special recognition went to Great GN (Dr.) Olufunke Momoh, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, and Great Ayoola Olajide, Host Chapter Chairman, whose leadership and coordination contributed to the success of the gathering.

Others who played important roles included Great Doyin Owobamirin, Chairman of the Media Committee; Great Wole Akinyode, Chairman of the Atlanta Chapter; Great Olufunsho Adewusi; Great Ademola Raji of the Indiana Chapter; Great Olusina Ojewola; Great (Rev.) Amos Oladipo; as well as numerous chapter leaders, volunteers and alumni.

Adding colour and excitement to the Reunion were Great Boy Alinko, Element, Babalonta JP and Great Arinola Ogungbe, among others.

With representatives from chapters across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Nigeria and elsewhere, Chicago became, for three days, a meeting point for generations of the worldwide Great Ife family.

From Buka Night to Serious Conversations About Ife’s Future

The Reunion opened on Friday with the much-anticipated Buka Night, which attracted a large turnout and immediately recreated the warmth, humour, camaraderie and cultural spirit associated with Great Ife gatherings.

It offered old friends an opportunity to reconnect, classmates to relive memories and alumni from different generations and chapters to establish new relationships.

But beneath the celebration was a serious purpose.

Saturday became the intellectual and strategic centrepiece of the Reunion, with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, presenting an extensive overview of the University’s achievements, challenges, opportunities and vision for the future.

His presentation was complemented by contributions from the Pro-Chancellor, Rt. Hon. Adejare Bello, Chief Dele Momodu, alumni leaders and other participants.

A central theme that emerged from the discussions was the need for stronger collaboration among the University, its alumni, private enterprise and other stakeholders to sustain the institution’s development.

A Campus in Encouraging Transition

The Reunion also provided an opportunity for alumni to hear about developments taking place within the University.

Without disclosing operational or security-sensitive details, the presentations pointed to improvements across several aspects of campus life and institutional development, including infrastructure, mobility, technology, student facilities, research and innovation, environmental improvement, institutional sustainability and the overall campus experience.

The discussions, however, also acknowledged that significant work remains.

The University’s historic infrastructure was developed for a considerably smaller population than it serves today, creating an ongoing need for modernisation, expansion and renewal.

An important lesson from the discussions was that development must go beyond constructing new facilities. Sustainable progress also requires a deliberate culture of maintenance, renewal and responsible stewardship to ensure that existing and new assets remain functional and valuable for future generations.

From Alumni Giving to Sustainable Partnership

One of the most significant themes of Chicago 2026 was the need to move alumni engagement beyond occasional donations towards a more structured and sustainable partnership with the University.

Discussions pointed towards a broader model encompassing investment, mentorship, professional expertise, institutional partnerships, research collaboration, scholarships, innovation and philanthropy.

A major proposal emerging from the Reunion was the development of a unified alumni endowment structure capable of providing long-term support for the University, backed by a comprehensive and current global alumni database.

The discussions highlighted the enormous human-capital network represented by Great Ife graduates across the world.

From medicine and technology to academia, law, finance, engineering, government and entrepreneurship, alumni occupy positions of influence and professional expertise across numerous sectors.

The strategic mobilisation of that network could provide significant opportunities for the University’s future development.

A Powerful Conversation on Drug Abuse and Student Welfare

Another major moment on Saturday was the presentation by Professor Femi Job on drug and substance use among young people and university students.

The presentation examined the pressures that can contribute to substance use, including academic stress and peer influence, while stressing the importance of treating substance-use disorder as a health and community challenge rather than relying solely on condemnation or punishment.

The ensuing discussion emphasised prevention, education, mental-health support, early intervention and coordinated institutional responses.

The session provided a direct engagement with an issue affecting young people and demonstrated that the Reunion was not solely about celebrating the past, but also about confronting challenges facing the next generation.

Professor Wande Abimbola: A Bridge Across Generations

Saturday also witnessed the highly celebrated appearance of Professor Wande Abimbola and his wife.

For many participants, the presence of the distinguished former Vice-Chancellor, scholar and global custodian of Yoruba intellectual and cultural heritage represented more than ceremonial recognition.

It provided a link between generations of the Great Ife story.

His presence underscored the enduring role of teachers, scholars, administrators, students and alumni in preserving and advancing the values of an institution.

The large Saturday attendance further demonstrated the strong emotional connection between Great Ife alumni and their alma mater.

Gala Night: Celebrating Excellence and Service

Saturday evening culminated in a colourful Gala and Awards Night, providing an atmosphere of celebration, recognition and fellowship.

The awards recognised distinguished contributions to the growth and advancement of the University.

Recipients included His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, Soun of Ogbomosoland; Dr. (Pastor) Amos Dele Dada; and Professor Adesuyi A. Ajayi.

The Gala also featured the triumphant entry of Professor Wande Abimbola, the Awise Agbaye and former Vice-Chancellor, whose contribution to the University has touched generations of students and alumni.

Beyond the glamour of the evening, the occasion reinforced a broader message: achievement carries responsibility, and alumni who have attained professional success remain part of a larger community whose knowledge, influence, resources and networks can contribute to the continued development of their alma mater.

Faith, Fellowship and Thanksgiving

The Reunion also reflected the religious diversity of the Great Ife community.

A Jumat service was held on Friday, while Christian participants gathered on Sunday for a thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House Chicago.

The service provided an opportunity to give thanks for safe journeys, renewed relationships and the successful conclusion of the Reunion.

It also reflected the capacity of members of the Great Ife family to maintain mutual respect and common purpose across different religious traditions.

Experiencing Chicago Together

Sunday’s programme moved beyond the formal Reunion activities, allowing participants to experience some of Chicago’s attractions and landmarks.

The programme included a city experience, visits to notable locations, including the Obama Presidential Center area, and cruise activities accompanied by a guided exploration of downtown Chicago.

After days of discussing the history and future of their University, alumni had the opportunity simply to enjoy one another’s company.

The sightseeing, photographs, laughter and informal conversations provided a relaxed conclusion to three days of fellowship and reflection.

The Bigger Question: What Happens After Chicago?

Ultimately, the significance of Great Ife Reunion Chicago 2026 will be measured not only by attendance, distinguished personalities or the success of the various events, but by what follows.

The Reunion communiqué challenged alumni to become guest lecturers and mentors, offer professional expertise to the University, strengthen the global alumni database, support scholarships and deploy their professional networks, investments and global connections in the sustained interest of Obafemi Awolowo University.

Most importantly, it renewed the conversation about what Great Ife alumni across the world can accomplish collectively.

As participants departed Chicago for cities, countries and continents around the world, one message remained clear: Great Ife is more than a university attended in one’s youth. It is a lifelong community.

The closing spirit of the Reunion captured that enduring relationship: although an alumnus may leave Ife, Ife never truly leaves the alumnus.

The commitment emerging from Chicago is therefore to move beyond occasional interaction towards sustained partnership, bringing expertise, networks, mentorship, investment and philanthropy to bear on the continued advancement of the University.

Chicago hosted the Reunion. Friendships were renewed. Conversations were deepened. The vision was refreshed.

The greater assignment now is to transform the spirit of Chicago 2026 into enduring action for the advancement of Great Ife.
