Gov Nwifuru Sacks Ebonyi Commissioner of Works

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has removed the state Commissioner for Works, Stanley Lebechi Mbam, from office with immediate effect.

The announcement was contained in a public service statement issued on Saturday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor.

According to the statement, Nwifuru directed Mbam to immediately hand over all government property in his possession, including his official vehicle, to the Secretary to the State Government.

The former commissioner was also instructed to transfer the affairs and responsibilities of the Ministry of Works to the Permanent Secretary, who will oversee the ministry pending further directives from the state government.

The statement did not disclose the specific reason for Mbam’s removal.

The governor, however, assured residents that his administration remained focused on delivering effective governance and improving public infrastructure across the state.

The latest development follows previous disciplinary action against Mbam earlier this year.

Nwifuru had suspended the Works Commissioner indefinitely on February 28, 2026, alongside the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concession, Ogbonnaya Obasi-Abara.

The earlier suspension was linked to alleged dereliction of duty, concerns over the pace of project delivery and perceived lapses in the Ministry of Works.

Following the suspension, Mbam publicly apologised to the governor and appealed for another opportunity to continue serving in the administration. He accepted responsibility for what he described as unmet expectations and asked the governor for a second chance.

The governor later recalled Mbam and other suspended officials on May 3 during a service at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki.

Mbam subsequently resumed his position as Commissioner for Works before his latest removal.

The latest decision therefore marks another change in the leadership of the ministry under Nwifuru’s administration, which has repeatedly emphasised infrastructure development as a major priority.

The Permanent Secretary will now handle the ministry’s responsibilities pending further instructions from the state government.

The governor did not announce a replacement for Mbam in the statement announcing his removal.

The government also did not indicate whether the former commissioner would be assigned another role or face any further administrative action.
