Gordon, Keane Disagree Over Gap Between England, Spain

England forward Anthony Gordon and former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane have disagreed over the gap between England and Spain following the European champions’ 3-2 victory at Wembley.

Gordon, who scored England’s equaliser, said the result did not convince him that Spain were superior to Thomas Tuchel’s side.

“I don’t think there is a gap. I feel like we’re right there,” Gordon told ITV Sport, adding that England could have won had Harry Kane converted his second-half penalty.

He said the performance demonstrated that England were capable of competing with the world champions and that he would have been confident facing Spain in a World Cup final.

Keane, however, disagreed with Gordon’s assessment, pointing to Spain’s status as both world and European champions.

“I disagree with Gordon, I think there is a gap,” Keane said.

Spain took an early lead through Lamine Yamal after a defensive error from Marc Guehi before Gordon levelled with a counter-attacking finish.

Kane then put England ahead with a header four minutes later, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead at half-time.

England had an opportunity to extend their advantage early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty after a VAR review found Rodri had fouled Jude Bellingham.

Kane slipped while taking the spot-kick and sent his effort against the crossbar.

Spain responded with two goals, Alex Baena equalising in the 60th minute before Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner 14 minutes later.

The defeat ended England’s opening Nations League fixture without a point, while Spain extended their unbeaten run to 39 matches.

Tuchel said England had done enough to create opportunities but were punished for mistakes and a lack of composure in key areas.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, meanwhile, said his side controlled most of the match apart from a brief period in the first half when England scored twice.

England will next face Czech Republic away on Tuesday before travelling to Croatia on October 3 as their Nations League campaign continues.
