Good Good Golf CEO, President Leave Company After Controversial Advert
Good Good Golf CEO Matt Kendrick and President Joe Flannery leave following backlash over controversial Callaway driver advertisement.
Good Good Golf CEO Matt Kendrick and President Joe Flannery have left the company after backlash over a controversial advertisement produced in collaboration with Callaway.
The changes were announced to employees on Wednesday as fallout from the advertisement continued.
Kendrick, a co-founder of Good Good, stepped down as chief executive, while Flannery also chose to part ways with the company. Nahid Giga, another co-founder and an early investor, has been appointed interim CEO immediately.
The changes come less than two weeks after Good Good released a promotional video for a co-branded Callaway driver. The advert showed co-founder Garrett Clark running towards creator Alexis Miestowski and appearing to shove her to the ground after she reached toward a golf bag.
Clark then warned her not to touch his new driver.
The video was widely criticised for trivialising violence against women. Good Good removed the advertisement and apologised, while Callaway also issued an apology before eventually ending its partnership with the content creator brand.
The controversy has triggered commercial consequences for Good Good. Several major retailers removed its products from their shelves, while the company withdrew as title sponsor of a planned PGA Tour event in Austin, Texas. The tournament will still be held.
Good Good also faced changes within its marketing department, with its vice-president of brand and marketing and another employee leaving the company following it.
Kendrick criticised Callaway, saying he had not seen the advertisement before publication.
Callaway chief executive Chip Brewer acknowledged that the manufacturer approved the advertisement before publication and said the company had begun internal and external investigations.
Despite the turmoil, Good Good said it continued to see growth in retail sales and followers, while maintaining investor support.
The company, founded as a YouTube channel in 2020, has grown into one of golf’s largest digital creator brands, expanding into apparel, merchandise, television and live events.
Giga will oversee the company during the leadership transition period, while Good Good’s creator team, including Clark, is expected to continue producing content over the coming weeks.
The departures mark the latest development in a controversy that has disrupted Good Good’s business.
