Fury Confirms Joshua Fight In USA
Tyson Fury confirms his Anthony Joshua showdown will take place in New York, though final arrangements remain unresolved.
Tyson Fury has confirmed that his heavyweight showdown with Anthony Joshua is set to take place in the United States, with Madison Square Garden in New York emerging as the proposed venue.
Fury’s confirmation comes after weeks of uncertainty over where the all-British blockbuster would be staged. The fight had initially been expected to take place in the United Kingdom, but organisers have pushed for the event to be held in America.
Fury posted promotional material indicating that Madison Square Garden would host the contest, adding momentum to a fight that has been discussed for more than a decade.
The proposed bout is expected to take place on November 20, although the date has not yet been confirmed by all parties.
The venue has become the main obstacle in negotiations. Joshua’s team has preferred a fight in Britain, with Wembley Stadium regarded as the desired location. However, the organisers and broadcaster Netflix are understood to favour New York.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has raised concerns about the financial impact of staging the fight in the United States, particularly because of taxation in New York. Hearn has nevertheless indicated that Joshua’s camp is willing to consider the American venue if terms are agreed.
Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, has expressed confidence that the fight will go ahead despite the disagreement. He said negotiations were continuing and that he expected the heavyweight rivals to meet in America.
The clash is one of the biggest fights available in boxing, bringing together two former world heavyweight champions from Britain.
Fury returned to action in April, defeating Arslanbek Makhmudov by unanimous decision in London. Joshua also had a comeback victory in July, stopping Kristian Prenga in the second round in Saudi Arabia.
The two fighters have been linked with a meeting since 2016, but previous negotiations repeatedly collapsed because of contractual issues, mandatory challengers and other obstacles.
The latest developments suggest the fight is closer than ever, but Joshua has not yet publicly confirmed the proposed New York venue.
If completed, the contest would finally settle one of boxing’s most anticipated heavyweight rivalries and attract worldwide attention.
