Funke Akindele’s Absence from Kamo State’s Premiere Sparks Debate
Funke Akindele’s absence from her protégé Kamo State’s debut movie premiere in Lagos has triggered speculation online about the state of their relationship.
Nollywood actress Funke Akindele’s absence from the premiere of skit maker Akinyoola Ayoola, popularly known as Kamo State, has sparked debate among social media users.
Kamo’s debut cinema film, Star Lomo, premiered in Lagos on Sunday, but Akindele was not present at the event despite their close professional relationship and her previous public support for the skit maker.
The relationship between the two became more prominent during the production and promotion of Everybody Loves Jenifa in 2024, after which Kamo frequently appeared in content shared by Akindele.
Kamo also featured in projects associated with the actress, including Aiyetoro Town Season 2, Behind The Scenes and Everybody Loves Jenifa. Akindele had also publicly supported some of his personal and professional activities.
However, their appearances together reportedly became less frequent earlier this year, with Kamo appearing less often on Akindele’s social media platforms.
The development, combined with her absence from the Star Lomo premiere, led some social media users to speculate that the pair might have fallen out. Others compared the situation with Akindele’s previous relationships with protégés such as Juliana Oloyede, popularly known as Toyo Baby, and Tobi Makinde.
Akindele’s absence also attracted attention because she was in Ghana at the time for a staycation with singer Waje, who is part of the cast of her forthcoming film, The Four.
The online reactions were mixed, with some users questioning why Akindele did not attend the premiere, while others defended her and highlighted her previous support for Kamo.
Some supporters pointed to her attendance at Kamo’s wedding, reported sponsorship of his child’s naming ceremony, appearances in his projects and promotion of his work as evidence of her continued support.
Others argued that her absence from one event was not enough to establish that the two were no longer on good terms.
There has been no public confirmation from either Akindele or Kamo that they have fallen out, and the social media speculation does not establish that their relationship has ended.
