FRSC Blames Speeding for Otedola Bridge Tanker Fire
The FRSC identifies speeding as a suspected factor in the Otedola Bridge tanker crash that sparked a fire and injured two people in Lagos.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has raised concerns over speeding following a tanker crash that triggered a fire around Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, October 19.
The incident involved a diesel-laden tanker that reportedly lost control, struck a curb and plunged from the bridge before bursting into flames.
The crash caused panic among motorists and residents in the area, while emergency responders rushed to the scene to contain the fire and assist victims.
Two people reportedly sustained severe burn injuries in the incident and were evacuated to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate for medical attention.
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the FRSC and the police participated in the emergency response.
The fire also disrupted traffic along the busy expressway as responders worked to secure the area and prevent further danger to road users.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads, particularly along the Otedola Bridge corridor, where high traffic volumes and previous tanker-related incidents have raised public safety concerns.
Road safety authorities routinely warn tanker operators against excessive speed, reckless driving and failure to maintain their vehicles, stressing that such practices can increase the risk of serious crashes and fires.
However, the precise circumstances surrounding Monday’s incident remain subject to investigation. Questions about the tanker’s speed, possible mechanical failure and the events immediately preceding the crash require confirmation from the authorities.
The FRSC is expected to establish the cause of the incident as investigations progress.
Motorists have been urged to observe speed limits, maintain safe distances and exercise caution when travelling near heavy-duty vehicles, particularly on busy expressways.
The incident serves as another reminder of the potential consequences of road crashes involving tankers carrying combustible products and the importance of enforcing road safety regulations.
