French Teenager Arrested Over Alleged Plot To Kidnap Kylian Mbappe

French authorities have arrested an 18-year-old suspect accused of involvement in a network that allegedly planned to kidnap Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe.

The teenager, identified as Clément L., was placed in pre-trial detention after being charged in Nanterre on August 21 in connection with organised robbery. Investigators suspect he was also involved in home invasions and kidnapping plans carried out or prepared between April 11 and August 19.

Mbappe, France’s national team captain, was reportedly among 26 people identified as potential targets. The list allegedly included footballers, rappers and wealthy business figures, with investigators finding information about their addresses on phones linked to the suspect.

Authorities believe Clément operated under the alias “Lester Z” while in prison. He was already being held at Villepinte prison over previous offences, including organised armed robbery and pimping.

The investigation began after a failed attempt to rob a watchmaker in Neuilly-sur-Seine in April. Three men allegedly posed as delivery workers before the victim became suspicious and alerted authorities.

A second incident followed on May 4, when two armed men robbed the watchmaker’s Paris business and escaped with 11 luxury watches valued at about €150,000. Investigators later found fingerprints on a box connected to the earlier attempt, helping them identify suspects.

Police subsequently seized two mobile phones. The devices allegedly contained a list of 26 potential victims, bringing the kidnapping and robbery plans to investigators’ attention.

Clément has denied being the mastermind behind the alleged network. During questioning, he acknowledged knowing that some activities were illegal but claimed his role was limited to acting as an intermediary between another alleged leader and people carrying out operations.

The teenager has since been placed in isolation while the investigation continues. An alleged accomplice was also charged but released under judicial supervision.

The case has attracted attention because of Mbappe’s profile and the number of people allegedly targeted. The allegations have not been established by a court.

Mbappe has continued his football activities with Real Madrid following the revelations, while French authorities work to determine the structure of the alleged network and the role of each suspect.
