The newly established Ovats Architecture Foundation has launched initiatives aimed at addressing graduate unemployment and the transition from university education to professional practice among young architects.

Founded by architect Precious Enanga-che Ovat, the foundation is discussing with the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Calabar, the establishment of the Linus Ovat’s Award for Excellence in Architecture.

The proposed award will recognise the best graduating student in the Department of Architecture and is expected to debut at the university’s forthcoming convocation.

The foundation said it intends to develop the prize into the largest financial award for architecture graduates among Nigerian universities.

Ovat said the initiative was designed to prevent talented graduates from leaving the profession because of financial difficulties after completing their studies.

He said the foundation would provide financial assistance to eligible graduates as they seek employment, pursue further education or establish themselves professionally.

It also plans to support undergraduates and recent graduates who require financial assistance for postgraduate studies.

Ovat said the foundation would identify promising architectural talent across Africa and create pathways for young architects and designers to access opportunities locally and internationally.

He added that the organisation would organise architectural competitions, networking opportunities and collaborative programmes to enable students, graduates and professionals to exchange ideas and strengthen their skills.

The foundation, established on July 19 and formally registered in Nigeria on September 14, selected UNICROSS for its inaugural programme because Ovat began his tertiary education at the institution, formerly known as CRUTECH.

The inaugural award will be named after his father, architect Linus Ovat, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects who served in senior positions in the Cross River State Government.

The foundation said its partnership with UNICROSS would be the first in a series of programmes designed to strengthen the transition from architectural education to professional practice in Nigeria and eventually across Africa.
