Flood: Soludo’s Wife Urges Anambra Residents to Remain Vigilant

The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged residents to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures as flooding continues to affect communities across the state.

Mrs Soludo expressed concern over the impact of the flooding on families, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, following torrential rainfall that rendered some roads and communities inaccessible.

She advised residents to pay close attention to weather and flood warnings, avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, and relocate to safer areas whenever their homes or immediate surroundings become unsafe.

The governor’s wife also appealed to residents to maintain clean surroundings and desist from dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that blocked waterways could worsen flooding and pose serious risks to lives and property.

She particularly urged parents and guardians to keep children away from floodwaters, drainage channels, streams and other potentially dangerous areas during heavy rainfall.

Mrs Soludo stressed the importance of community awareness and collective responsibility, saying early action and responsible environmental practices could help reduce the risks associated with flooding.

She also encouraged residents to report emergencies and other situations requiring urgent intervention to the appropriate authorities.

The First Lady urged communities to look out for one another and respond quickly whenever floodwaters begin to rise.

She commiserated with families and communities severely affected by the floods and appealed for calm, assuring residents that the state government would continue to take measures to cushion the impact of the disaster.

The warning followed two days of torrential rainfall that caused flooding and gully erosion in several parts of Anambra, affecting roads, houses, schools, farmlands and markets.

In one incident along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka, seven schoolchildren and two adults were rescued after their vehicle was overturned by floodwaters, while another schoolchild was initially reported missing.

The latest flooding has renewed concerns over the safety of residents in vulnerable communities, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

Mrs Soludo reiterated that preparedness, vigilance and responsible environmental practices were essential to protecting lives and reducing the impact of flooding across the state.
