Flood Alert: Lagos Govt Orders Residents in Vulnerable Areas to Relocate

The Lagos State Government has directed residents living in flood-prone and low-lying communities to temporarily relocate to higher ground following a seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the directive on Monday.

Wahab said the alert, covering September 19 to 25, affects Lagos and 14 other states, warning of rising river levels and flooding.

He identified Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront Jetty and Jetty Terminal B among vulnerable areas.

Other locations listed include Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto and parts of Agboyi, downstream of Isheri Olofin.

He urged residents in affected communities to act early, saying relocation could prevent loss of lives, homes and property.

He advised residents in affected communities to move to safer, elevated areas and remain there until the peak of the rainy season passes.

Wahab also urged residents near rivers, lagoons, wetlands and drainage channels to monitor official flood forecasts and follow safety advisories.

He specifically warned communities along the Ogun River and other major waterways to exercise caution, noting that heavy rainfall and rising water levels upstream could affect downstream communities in Lagos.

The commissioner said monitoring had been intensified in flood-prone communities.

He called on local governments, emergency management agencies, community leaders and residents to activate early-warning and response mechanisms.

Wahab urged residents to move people, livestock and valuable possessions to safer locations.

He said the government would continue monitoring river levels, rainfall patterns and other hydrological developments in collaboration with relevant federal agencies.

The commissioner added that routine cleaning, maintenance and monitoring of drainage infrastructure would continue.

He appealed to residents to avoid dumping refuse in drains, canals and waterways, warning that blocked drainage channels could worsen flooding.

Wahab cautioned residents against walking or driving through flooded roads, bridges and fast-moving water during the warning period.

He urged Lagosians to remain vigilant, follow official warnings and prepare for temporary relocation whenever flooding becomes imminent.

The commissioner assured residents that it would provide timely updates as the situation evolves.
