Flamingos Captain Chidi Says U-17 World Cup Triumph Would Be Unforgettable
Nigeria captain Harmony Chidi says winning the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup would be a historic and unforgettable achievement for the team and the country as the Flamingos prepare to face Japan in the final.
Captain of Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, Harmony Chidi, has described winning the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as a dream achievement that would remain memorable for the players, coaching crew and the country.
Chidi made the remarks ahead of Saturday’s final against Japan in Morocco, saying that although reaching the final was already a significant milestone, lifting the trophy would make the occasion even more special.
She said winning the competition would bring immense joy and pride to the team and the country, adding that it was an ambition the players had worked towards.
The Flamingos have made history as the first African team to reach the final of the tournament, earning an opportunity to become the continent’s first champions.
Nigeria’s campaign began with a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B fixture, but the team recovered to record five consecutive victories against Puerto Rico, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil.
Their 3-1 semi-final victory over Brazil secured a place in the title match and extended their impressive run in the competition.
Head coach Akeem Busari attributed the team’s recovery from the opening defeat to psychological guidance, improved confidence and renewed commitment to their playing approach.
He said the technical crew held discussions with the players after the loss to Poland, helping them address their attitude, understand the game plan and regain focus.
Busari acknowledged Japan’s quality, particularly its performance against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, but said the final would present a different challenge for both sides.
He also praised the players for their contribution to the team’s progress, describing them as the driving force behind the achievement.
The coach urged the Flamingos to remain focused, stressing that reaching the final did not mean their mission was complete.
Victory over Japan would make Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
