BREAKING: Flamingos Beat Japan 2-1 to Win First U-17 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history, defeating Japan 2-1 to become the first African champions of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have won their first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final of the 2026 tournament in Morocco.
The historic victory makes Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, bringing an end to the country’s long wait for the title.
The final was played on Saturday, November 7, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, where the Flamingos overcame a strong Japanese side to secure the championship.
Nigeria’s triumph also marks a major achievement for women’s football on the continent, as no African team had previously reached the final of the competition before the Flamingos made history with their qualification for this year’s showpiece.
The team, coached by Akeem Busari, entered the final with growing confidence after an impressive knockout-stage campaign.
Their journey included victories over Mexico and Venezuela before a commanding 3-1 win against Brazil in the semi-final. Awawu Bashiru scored twice in that encounter, while Queen Joseph also found the net.
Japan reached the final after defeating defending champions North Korea on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their semi-final.
The Japanese team had been seeking a second title, having previously won the competition in 2014. However, Nigeria’s determination and performance in the final secured the trophy for the African nation.
The victory represents a significant milestone for Nigerian football and provides a major boost to the development and visibility of women’s football across Africa.
It also gives the Flamingos a place in history as the first Nigerian and African team to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
