Fire Service Responds to Over 80 Emergency Calls in Nasarawa
The Federal Fire Service in Nasarawa State says it has responded to more than 80 emergency calls since January, rescuing lives and saving property worth millions of naira.
The Nasarawa State Command of the Federal Fire Service says it has responded to more than 80 emergency calls involving fire incidents and other rescue operations between January and September 2026.
The Controller of the service in the state, Mrs Eno Nwachukwu, disclosed this on Friday in Lafia during an Ember Months fire safety sensitisation and enlightenment campaign.
Nwachukwu said the command had recorded significant success in responding to emergencies, adding that several lives were saved and property worth millions of naira recovered during the period.
She said the command received between 80 and 100 fire-related calls since the beginning of the year and was able to respond to all the incidents.
According to her, early reporting of fire incidents had helped firefighters prevent buildings from being completely consumed by flames and enabled them to salvage property.
She said the Ember Months campaign was aimed at educating residents on fire prevention and appropriate steps to take when incidents occurred before the arrival of firefighters.
Nwachukwu warned residents against leaving electrical appliances switched on when leaving their homes and cautioned against overloading electrical sockets, particularly during the Ember Months when fire incidents often increase.
The campaign was organised under the theme, “Fire Safety, Emergency Evacuation and Practical First Aid Fire Fighting Drill.”
The Zonal Controller of Zone P, covering Nasarawa and Plateau states, Controller Hadiza Saliu, said the Federal Fire Service was collaborating with other security agencies on emergency response and fire prevention.
Saliu said the agencies worked together to sensitise the public, enforce compliance with fire safety standards and respond jointly to emergencies.
She said the service was placing greater emphasis on prevention, noting that reducing the occurrence of emergencies was preferable to responding after incidents had occurred.
Participants at the campaign included representatives of security agencies, civil servants, traditional rulers and members of the public. The event also featured practical demonstrations on tackling different types of fires using equipment including fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
