FG Shuts Owerri Airport for 25-Day Runway Rehabilitation
The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days from October 20 to allow runway repairs, resurfacing and extension ahead of the Christmas travel season.
The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days to allow for runway rehabilitation and extension.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decision on Friday, saying the closure would begin on October 20, 2026, following consultations between the Federal Government, the Imo State Government and aviation stakeholders in the South-East.
Keyamo said he had discussed the planned intervention with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, explaining that the works were necessary to improve aviation safety and prepare the airport for increased passenger traffic during the festive season.
The rehabilitation project will involve repairing deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, treating extensive surface cracks, filling potholes and resurfacing affected areas. The work will also include extending the runway to improve its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements.
The minister said the project would be executed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in partnership with the Imo State Government.
He explained that the timing was important because passenger traffic and flight movements to Owerri traditionally increase during the Christmas period.
Keyamo acknowledged that the temporary closure would inconvenience passengers and other airport users but appealed for their understanding, stressing that aviation safety remained a priority.
He advised travellers scheduled to use the airport during the closure period to contact their respective airlines for information on flight rescheduling, cancellations and alternative travel arrangements.
The minister added that the government would continue engaging the Imo State Government, airlines and other stakeholders to coordinate the project and minimise disruptions.
He commended Governor Uzodimma and the state government for their cooperation, describing the partnership as an effort to upgrade aviation infrastructure and support regional economic growth.
The government said the rehabilitation was expected to restore the runway to a safer and more reliable operational condition, while improving the airport’s capacity to serve passengers and airlines in the region.
The confirmed reopening date is expected to be communicated through official aviation channels.
