FG Begins Construction of 120MVA Power Substation in Katsina

The Federal Government has begun construction of a 120-megavolt-ampere (120MVA) power substation in Katsina State as part of efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve power supply in the region.

The project is expected to increase the capacity of the national grid, improve electricity transmission and support growing demand from households, businesses and industries in the state.

The substation is designed to provide additional capacity for transmitting electricity to distribution networks, helping to reduce congestion and improve the reliability of supply to consumers.

The development forms part of the government’s wider efforts to address infrastructure gaps in Nigeria’s power sector, where inadequate transmission and distribution capacity have continued to constrain electricity delivery.

A 120MVA substation can accommodate substantial electricity loads, although the actual number of homes and businesses it can serve will depend on the configuration of the facility, the available generation and transmission capacity, and the distribution network connected to it.

The project is also expected to support economic activities in Katsina by improving the infrastructure needed by commercial enterprises, small businesses and public institutions.

Reliable electricity supply remains a major challenge for Nigerian businesses, many of which rely on generators and other alternative sources of power to maintain operations. Investments in transmission infrastructure are therefore considered important to improving the efficiency of the electricity system.

The government has continued to pursue projects aimed at expanding transmission capacity, upgrading substations and strengthening the national grid.

Further details, including the project’s cost, contractor, expected completion date and the communities that will benefit directly, were not independently confirmed in the information available for this report.

The Federal Government is expected to provide additional details on the project as construction progresses.
