FCT Police Arrest About 300 Suspects in Crime Hotspot Raids

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested approximately 300 people during raids on identified crime hotspots, shanties and uncompleted buildings across the territory.

The operation, conducted on Saturday, September 19, was part of efforts to prevent crime, disrupt criminal activities and strengthen security across the Federal Capital Territory.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued at the command’s headquarters in Abuja and shared on its official X account on Sunday.

Adeh said the operation targeted several locations identified as potential criminal hideouts, with the suspects taken into custody for screening and profiling.

Items recovered during the raids included knives, a toy gun, cannabis and other illicit drugs.

She said suspects found to have committed offences would be charged to court in accordance with the law, while those found to have no case to answer would be released after the completion of the screening process.

The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, said the command would sustain intelligence-led raids and proactive policing operations, particularly in areas identified as potential hideouts for criminals.

Sanusi also cautioned youths and other residents against the use and abuse of illicit drugs, saying substance abuse could impair judgement, contribute to violent and criminal behaviour, and expose individuals and communities to security risks.

He advised people struggling with drug use to seek counselling and rehabilitation support.

The commissioner also directed police officers involved in raids and arrests to maintain professionalism, warning that such operations must not be used for extortion, intimidation, harassment or unlawful demands for money.

He said officers found engaging in misconduct would face disciplinary action.

The command urged residents to provide credible and timely information about suspicious activities and suspected criminal hideouts. It also provided 08032003913 as its emergency and security information line.
