Everton defeated Newcastle United 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday, with Thierno Barry scoring the decisive goal as the hosts suffered another disappointing home defeat.

Barry struck in the 49th minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek failed to hold Tyrique George’s effort. The forward reacted quickly to tap the rebound into an unguarded net, giving Everton the lead.

Newcastle struggled to create clear opportunities throughout the encounter, with their supporters expressing their frustration by booing the team at half-time and again at the final whistle.

Everton had earlier missed promising chances through Barry and Harrison Armstrong, while Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga came close to equalising in the 66th minute, only for his effort to hit the post.

Substitute Yoane Wissa tested Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford late in the match, but the former Sunderland player produced a save to preserve his side’s advantage.

Newcastle’s difficult evening ended with further disappointment when substitute Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards within 86 seconds, resulting in his dismissal in the eighth minute of added time.

The defeat marked Newcastle’s second loss to Everton in four days, following their 3-1 defeat in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

It also left Matthias Jaissle’s side with four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions, with the manager acknowledging responsibility for the team’s poor performance and the supporters’ reaction.

Everton manager David Moyes praised his players’ commitment and said the victory was important in helping the club move closer to the upper end of the league table.

The result lifted Everton to seventh place, while Newcastle dropped to 13th. It was also Everton’s first away league victory of the campaign.
