EPL Watkins, Martinez Could Leave Aston Villa, Says Emery
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has admitted that Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martínez could leave the club this summer. Watkins has attracted offers from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, while Martínez has expressed his desire for a new challenge.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has revealed that forwards Ollie Watkins and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez could leave the club amid a major squad overhaul.
Emery said Villa had received offers for Watkins but stressed that he would prefer to keep the England international if a suitable replacement could not be found.
The manager said any potential departure would have to benefit the player, the club and the team.
Watkins has attracted strong interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, which has reportedly made several approaches for the 30-year-old striker.
“I don't want to sell him, but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad,” Emery said.
Meanwhile, Martínez has told Emery that he wants to seek a new challenge after spending six years at Villa.
Emery said the Argentine goalkeeper had considered leaving previously but remained at the club and continued to perform at a high level.
The club subsequently signed Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as potential cover should Martínez depart.
Villa have already lost several key players during the transfer window, including Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans, while defender Ezri Konsa has completed a move to Arsenal.
Despite the departures, Emery said he was satisfied with the club's transfer activity and believed the squad had been strengthened with additions including Suzuki, Johan Manzambi, João Gomes, Matteo Ruggeri, Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Villa begin their Premier League campaign against Brighton on Sunday, with Emery facing the task of rebuilding a squad that won the Europa League last season.
