EPL: Man Utd Draw Fulham 1-1 as Pressure Mounts on Carrick

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday, extending a difficult run for Michael Carrick’s side.

United started brightly and created several chances in an entertaining first half, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the woodwork while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno produced important saves to keep the hosts level.

The visitors, however, struggled to maintain their momentum after the interval and were punished in the 63rd minute when Lisandro Martinez turned the ball into his own net after Senne Lammens had saved Calvin Bassey’s effort.

United pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Leno again denying Bryan Mbeumo as Fulham appeared on course for their first Premier League victory of the season under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa.

But the visitors eventually found a way through in the 89th minute. Matheus Cunha’s effort took a deflection before beating Leno to rescue a point for United.

The result prevented United from suffering a third consecutive defeat in the space of a week, following their 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the derby and their midweek League Cup collapse against Brighton, when they surrendered a two-goal lead before losing 3-2.

However, the draw did little to ease the scrutiny surrounding Carrick. United have now recorded just one victory in their first five Premier League matches and remain in the bottom half of the table.

The result also means United head into the international break 10 points behind leaders Manchester City, increasing the focus on Carrick and the team’s inconsistent start to the campaign.

Carrick has maintained that he is focused on his work rather than speculation about his future, but the latest result leaves United needing significant improvement when the Premier League resumes.

For Fulham, the point extended their wait for a first league win under Arbeloa, although their performance against United provided encouragement after a difficult opening to the campaign.

United will now have a lengthy break to regroup, address their recent defensive lapses and prepare for the next phase of the season, with supporters expecting a stronger response and greater consistency across all competitions after the break, with renewed focus on results and performance.
