EPL: Man City Beat Bournemouth 2-1 in Maresca’s Debut
Manchester City staged a late comeback to defeat Bournemouth, giving Enzo Maresca a winning Premier League debut.
Manchester City began the post-Pep Guardiola era with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The win also marked a successful Premier League debut for Enzo Maresca, who replaced Guardiola following the Spaniard’s trophy-laden decade at the club.
Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier, whose first-half strike gave the visitors a surprise advantage and left City facing an uncomfortable start to the new campaign.
City struggled to create clear opportunities for much of the match, with the team appearing short of attacking inspiration and defensive cohesion.
However, Maresca’s side produced a late surge that completely changed the outcome.
With just six minutes remaining, Marc Guehi rose to head home City’s equaliser and restore belief among the home supporters.
The comeback was completed deep into stoppage time when Josko Gvardiol calmly finished to give City a dramatic 2-1 victory.
The result provided Maresca with an immediate boost after questions were raised about City’s ability to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
City had suffered a 3-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Community Shield the previous weekend, increasing pressure on the new manager ahead of his first competitive league fixture.
Guardiola left behind an extraordinary record, winning 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, during his time at Manchester City.
Maresca has expressed confidence that he can build a similarly successful era if he is given sufficient time to oversee major changes within the squad.
The club has experienced significant turnover, with Rodri, Bernardo Silva, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Tijjani Reijnders among those who have departed.
Savinho is also reportedly set to join Tottenham, further highlighting the scale of the transition.
England midfielder Elliot Anderson, Maresca’s major summer signing so far, endured an underwhelming debut before being forced off with an injury.
City are reportedly closing in on teenage Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille in a deal worth £86 million.
Despite the late victory, Maresca is expected to strengthen his squad further as City attempt to close the gap on Arsenal and compete for the Premier League title.
