EPL: Henderson, Pedro Score Twice as Chelsea Thrash Bournemouth 5-1
Henderson and João Pedro scored twice each as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea returned to winning ways in the English Premier League on Saturday with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, inspired by braces from Jordan Henderson and João Pedro.
Henderson opened the scoring in the second minute after receiving a pass from Cole Palmer and finishing with a first-time effort. Chelsea doubled their advantage just over a minute later when Morgan Rogers found the net, with Henderson contributing to the move.
The hosts continued their fast start after the interval, with João Pedro scoring Chelsea’s third goal just 30 seconds into the second half. The Brazilian striker finished after Pedro Neto capitalised on a defensive error and delivered the ball into his path.
Bournemouth briefly threatened a response in the 51st minute when Evanilson scored from a corner. The goal exposed Chelsea’s difficulties defending set pieces and offered the visitors a short-lived opportunity to get back into the contest.
João Pedro restored Chelsea’s three-goal advantage in the 67th minute, converting a low delivery from Pep Chavarria. Henderson then completed the scoring three minutes later with a superb free kick from outside the penalty area.
The midfielder’s performance was particularly notable as he scored twice and assisted Rogers’ goal, making a major contribution to Chelsea’s first league victory in four matches.
The result provided a timely response for manager Xabi Alonso, whose side had gone three consecutive Premier League games without a win before the international break.
Chelsea’s attacking display was encouraging, although conceding to Bournemouth continued their run of league matches without a clean sheet. The defensive weakness remains an area for Alonso to address as the season progresses.
The victory lifted Chelsea to fifth place in the Premier League table with 10 points, while Bournemouth remained on three points after another disappointing result.
Chelsea will next face Everton away from home on October 17, while Bournemouth will seek to recover when they return to league action.
