EPL: Brighton Stun Man City as 10-Man Man Utd Suffer Defeat to Chelsea
Brighton secured a historic 1-0 win at Manchester City, while Chelsea defeated 10-man Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Brighton recorded a historic victory over Manchester City on Saturday, while Chelsea defeated 10-man Manchester United 2-0 in another eventful round of Premier League fixtures.
At the Etihad Stadium, Yasin Ayari scored the only goal as Brighton claimed a 1-0 victory, handing City their second consecutive league defeat.
Ayari struck in the 11th minute after capitalising on a defensive error by Matheus Nunes, firing past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to give the visitors an early advantage.
Manchester City dominated much of the second half as they searched for an equaliser, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced an outstanding performance to keep the hosts at bay.
Verbruggen made seven saves, denying several attempts as Brighton held on for their first-ever away victory against City.
The defeat was City’s second in succession in the Premier League, following their previous loss to Aston Villa. They also ended a run of 25 consecutive league matches in which they had scored.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea took advantage of Manchester United’s second-half collapse to secure a 2-0 win.
Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute after driving through United’s defence before lifting the ball beyond goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United’s afternoon worsened in the 63rd minute when defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for an incident involving Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area.
The decision followed a VAR review, with Chelsea also awarded a penalty. Cole Palmer converted from the spot a minute later to double the hosts’ advantage.
United had created several opportunities in the first half but failed to convert them, and their defeat extended their winless run in all competitions to nine matches.
The result lifted Chelsea into fourth place, while Brighton moved to third with 19 points.
Manchester City remained on 21 points, level with Arsenal, who had an opportunity to move ahead at the top with a positive result against Liverpool on Sunday.
The results added further pressure on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, while City’s consecutive defeats opened the door for their title rivals to gain ground.
