EPL: Arteta Targets End to Arsenal’s 14-Year Winless Run at Anfield
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says his side are determined to end their 14-year Premier League winless streak at Anfield when they face Liverpool on Sunday.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has challenged his players to end the club’s 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield when they take on Liverpool on Sunday.
The Gunners travel to Merseyside for the league encounter, with their last victory at the stadium coming in September 2012, when goals from Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla secured a 2-0 win.
Since then, Arsenal have made 13 Premier League visits to Anfield without recording a victory, drawing five and losing eight.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match, Arteta described the fixture as an opportunity for his team to overcome the difficult record.
“It’s 14 years that we haven’t won there, so it’s time to do it,” the Spaniard said.
He added that Arsenal had previously ended long-standing winless runs at other grounds and believed his team had the quality to achieve a similar breakthrough at Anfield.
Arteta urged his players to approach the match with conviction and a clear purpose, saying they had come close to winning at the stadium in recent seasons.
The Arsenal manager also acknowledged the challenge posed by Liverpool, particularly their attacking threat and ability to press opponents aggressively.
He singled out striker Alexander Isak as a major threat, stressing the need to limit the forward’s access to the ball and prevent him from exploiting spaces behind the defence.
Sunday’s encounter will also see Arteta face Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, whom he described as a former teammate and close acquaintance from their younger playing days.
Arsenal head into the fixture after a disappointing League Cup exit against fourth-tier Fleetwood Town, while Arteta will be hoping his side can respond positively in the Premier League.
The Gunners are also dealing with injury and suspension concerns, including the absence of Bukayo Saka and the suspension of teenager Max Dowman.
The match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. GMT on Sunday, November 1, at Anfield.
