EPL: Arsenal Suffer First Defeat of Season as Brighton Win 3-0
Brighton end Arsenal’s perfect start with 3-0 victory, handing champions their first defeat of season.
Arsenal’s perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season came to an abrupt end on Saturday as Brighton & Hove Albion defeated the defending champions 3-0 at the Amex Stadium.
The defeat ended Arsenal’s run of seven consecutive victories in all competitions and handed them their first league loss after four successive wins.
Brighton took control early, pressing Arsenal aggressively and preventing Mikel Arteta’s side from settling into their usual rhythm.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when Pascal Gross collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area and fired a low effort that went in off the post.
Arsenal struggled to respond and Brighton doubled their advantage just before half-time.
Charalampos Kostoulas received the ball outside the box and produced another low, long-range finish to beat David Raya, giving Brighton a 2-0 lead at the interval.
Brighton continued to dominate after the restart and extended their advantage in the 57th minute.
Chema Andres rose at the far post to head home a corner delivered by Gross, making it 3-0 and scoring his first Premier League goal for the club.
Arsenal attempted to respond through substitutions, but Brighton remained organised and continued to create dangerous opportunities.
The result was Arsenal’s heaviest defeat in three years and their first loss of the campaign after an impressive opening that included victories over Manchester United, Leeds United, Chelsea and Sunderland.
Arsenal had scored consistently during their opening matches, but they struggled to create clear chances against Brighton and were repeatedly forced backwards by the hosts’ pressure.
Brighton’s victory also extended their impressive scoring run, with the Seagulls reaching 16 league goals from their opening five matches.
Arteta admitted after the match that Brighton deserved the victory and said his players had failed to compete at the required level.
He acknowledged that Arsenal made technical errors, lost important duels and struggled to cope with Brighton’s intensity.
The victory moved Brighton to third place with 10 points from five matches under manager Fabian Hurzeler, while Arsenal dropped to second with 12 points.
Instead, they will head into the international break needing to regroup before returning to Premier League action.
