EPL: Alonso Wants ‘Boring’ Chelsea Wins After Hull Hold Blues to 2-2 Draw

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has admitted he would welcome more “boring” victories after his side were held to a 2-2 draw by Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea took an early lead through Morgan Rogers, but Hull responded with two goals from Mohamed Belloumi within six minutes to turn the game around before half-time.

Joao Pedro restored parity for Chelsea in the 66th minute, but the hosts were unable to find a winning goal despite creating further opportunities late in the match.

Alonso was particularly critical of Chelsea’s defensive performance, saying his team must learn to control matches better once they take the lead.

The Spaniard acknowledged that the contest may have been entertaining for supporters but said he would rather see Chelsea produce less dramatic performances if that meant securing victories.

Chelsea have now conceded two goals in each of their opening four Premier League matches, highlighting the defensive problems Alonso is still trying to resolve.

The draw also extended Hull’s impressive unbeaten start to the season. The newly promoted side arrived at Stamford Bridge having already defeated Manchester United and drawn with Aston Villa, and they again showed considerable resilience against a Chelsea team with far greater resources.

Belloumi was the standout player for Hull, twice capitalising on Chelsea’s defensive weaknesses to put the visitors in front.

Chelsea’s attacking players eventually rescued a point, with Joao Pedro continuing his strong start to the campaign by scoring the equaliser.

However, Alonso will be concerned that his team have repeatedly allowed opponents back into matches after establishing promising positions.

The result leaves Chelsea with another frustrating dropped opportunity as they look to establish consistency under their new manager.

Alonso believes the defensive problems can be corrected, but he acknowledged that changing the recurring patterns will take time.

For Chelsea, the challenge is now to combine their attacking quality with greater defensive organisation. Alonso’s desire for “boring” wins reflects his growing emphasis on controlling games, protecting leads and avoiding the mistakes that have cost his side valuable points.
