EPL: Alonso Urges Chelsea to Learn From Painful Defeat at Arsenal
Alonso urges Chelsea to learn from painful Arsenal defeat and improve after losing unbeaten start.
Xabi Alonso has urged Chelsea to learn from their 2-1 defeat by Arsenal and use the experience to improve as they chase the Premier League champions.
Chelsea took the lead after 77 seconds when Morgan Rogers finished, but Arsenal responded through Kai Havertz before Martin Odegaard scored the winner after the interval.
The defeat ended Alonso’s unbeaten start as Chelsea manager after victories over Fulham and Brighton and Luton Town in the League Cup.
Alonso admitted the result was painful but said his players must remain calm and continue working as the club develops under his management.
“I learnt about the game, about us, about what we are doing, what we are starting,” Alonso said, stressing that Chelsea’s rebuilding process was still at an early stage.
The Spaniard identified defensive improvement as a priority, with Chelsea having conceded seven goals in their first three league matches.
He said the team needed to begin keeping clean sheets while acknowledging that the players remained committed to improving themselves.
Alonso was frustrated that Chelsea failed to build on their early advantage, saying the visitors spent too much time defending after Rogers’ goal.
He also felt Chelsea could have defended Arsenal’s winning goal better, particularly by controlling the overloads on the right side.
Despite the disappointment, Alonso said the players showed the attitude and desire required to compete against top opposition and believed the experience would benefit them.
“It’s game three and this is going to be a long, long ride,” he said, reflecting his belief that Chelsea’s development will take time.
Arsenal maintained their start to the league campaign with a third consecutive victory.
Mikel Arteta praised his players for their response after conceding early and said he enjoyed the way Arsenal competed throughout.
The result strengthened Arsenal’s position as Premier League champions while giving Chelsea an indication of the level required to challenge for the title.
For Alonso, the task is to correct Chelsea’s defensive weaknesses while maintaining attacking quality that helped the team begin the season strongly.
Chelsea will now look to respond against Hull City, with Alonso expecting his players to take lessons from the Arsenal defeat and continue progress.
