Enugu NDC Candidate Visits Attack Victims, Pledges Medical Support
NDC governorship candidate Chinyeaka Ohaa visited party members injured in an attack on a ward meeting in Enugu and pledged to cover their medical expenses and recovery costs.
The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, Chinyeaka Ohaa, has visited party members injured during an attack on a ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area.
Ohaa, who condemned the incident, pledged to take responsibility for the medical expenses and other necessary costs incurred by the victims during their treatment and recovery.
The attack occurred on September 12 at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuoffia, where armed men reportedly disrupted the NDC’s monthly ward meeting. The party said eight members sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.
The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the disruption and ordered an investigation into the incident, with officers deployed to the area to prevent further breaches and track down the attackers.
Speaking during his visit to the injured members on Sunday, Ohaa said he was at the hospital not only as the party’s governorship candidate but also as a citizen and indigene of Nkanuland.
He said the incident demonstrated the need to prevent political disagreements from resulting in violence and urged security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation.
Ohaa called for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted regardless of their political affiliation or connections, saying justice should be accompanied by measures to prevent similar incidents.
He also appealed to his supporters not to retaliate, urging them to pursue lawful means in responding to the attack.
The candidate expressed concern over reports of disruptions at other political gatherings in Nkanu West on the same day, including an incident at St Joseph Primary School, Agbani.
He urged political leaders, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to speak against political violence and promote peaceful political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ohaa said residents should be able to participate in political activities without fear and called on political actors to disagree peacefully, campaign without intimidation and compete without violence.
