England Stars Take Cover as Tornado Warning Hits World Cup Base in Kansas City
England players and staff were forced to shelter after a tornado warning and severe thunderstorms hit their World Cup base in Kansas City, disrupting preparations ahead of their tournament matches.
England’s World Cup preparations were briefly disrupted on Saturday night after players and staff were forced to take shelter following a tornado warning and severe storm alerts in Kansas City.
The England national football team had only just arrived at their training base at Swope Soccer Village in Missouri when emergency weather alerts were issued across the region, warning of potentially life-threatening conditions.
The warning followed a day of intense heat in which the squad, led by manager Thomas Tuchel, held a community training session at Victory Field before weather conditions deteriorated later in the evening.
Mobile phones across the area received urgent alerts from the National Weather Service, which described the situation as an “imminent threat” and warned of destructive winds of up to 80 mph.
“Take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows. Flying debris may be deadly to those caught without shelter,” the alert read.
Players and coaching staff were instructed to remain inside their hotel, The Inn at Meadowbrook in Prairie Village, as officials monitored the storm system. Although no tornado ultimately touched down near the England base, the region experienced heavy rainfall, lightning strikes and strong winds.
The incident highlights the unpredictable weather challenges that could affect matches during the expanded 48-team tournament across the United States, where strict lightning safety protocols are enforced at all venues.
Under tournament safety rules, outdoor football activities must be suspended immediately if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius. Matches are paused and teams are moved to safety, with play only resuming after a 30-minute lightning-free window.
The situation adds to a series of weather-related disruptions already experienced by England during their build-up. Earlier in Orlando, a pre-tournament friendly against Costa Rica was delayed by one hour due to thunderstorms, with parts of the pitch briefly waterlogged before drainage systems restored conditions.
Despite the scare, England are expected to continue their preparations at Swope Soccer Village as they aim to maintain focus ahead of their opening World Cup fixtures.
Tournament organisers have already warned that weather interruptions could become a recurring feature due to the vast geographic spread of the competition and seasonal storm patterns across host cities in North America.
