Emir Of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, Dies In Egypt

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died in Cairo, Egypt, ending a 46-year reign over the historic emirate.

The monarch died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, while receiving medical treatment in Cairo. His death was announced in a condolence message by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, and was subsequently confirmed by the Jigawa State Government.

Sani II ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, following the death of his father, and remained the Emir of Gumel until his death. His reign, spanning almost 46 years, made him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in northern Nigeria.

The late emir was born on December 12, 1942, and was the 16th Emir of Gumel. He was widely regarded as a prominent traditional ruler whose influence extended beyond the palace to education, peacebuilding, community development and the preservation of cultural values.

Pantami described Sani II as a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom and a father to all. He said the monarch dedicated his life to serving his people, promoting peace and education and preserving the traditions and cultural heritage of the Gumel Emirate.

President Bola Tinubu also expressed sadness over the monarch’s death, describing his 46-year reign as a remarkable and historic era. The President hailed Sani II’s contributions as a scholar, administrator and statesman whose impact extended beyond the traditional institution.

Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda also condoled with the Jigawa Government, the Gumel Emirate and the monarch’s family. Radda described the late emir as a respected traditional ruler whose reign promoted peace, education and community development.

News of the monarch’s death has triggered mourning across Gumel and Jigawa State, with tributes continuing from political leaders, traditional institutions and members of the public.

The late emir’s death marks the end of one of the longest reigns in the history of the Gumel Emirate and leaves a significant vacancy in one of northern Nigeria’s historic traditional institutions.

His passing is expected to be felt by the royal family, title holders, community leaders and residents of the emirate.
