Eguavoen Appointed Interim Super Falcons Coach Ahead of 2028 Olympic Qualifiers

Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen has been appointed interim coach of the Super Falcons ahead of the team’s 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign.

Eguavoen will oversee the senior women’s national team following the departure of former head coach Justin Madugu and his technical crew after Nigeria’s disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Christopher Danjuma, who has coached Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, during multiple World Cup cycles, is expected to assist Eguavoen as the team prepares for its upcoming assignment.

The appointment comes with the Super Falcons facing an important Olympic qualifying tie against Comoros in October.

Nigeria received a bye into the second round of the African qualifying competition because of its high ranking, while Comoros advanced after eliminating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

The two-legged tie is scheduled for October 9 and 13, with both matches billed to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

The Super Falcons are seeking qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and will be aiming to build on their return to the Olympic tournament at Paris 2024 after a 16-year absence.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup following the 2026 WAFCON campaign had prompted the NFF and National Sports Commission to review the team’s technical structure.

The federation had been considering several candidates for the vacant permanent position, including former Super Falcons coaches Thomas Dennerby and Florence Omagbemi.

Eguavoen’s interim appointment provides the team with immediate technical leadership while discussions continue over the long-term coaching structure.

The former Super Eagles captain and coach has extensive experience with Nigeria’s national teams and has previously taken charge of the senior men’s side on an interim basis.

His immediate responsibility will be to prepare the Falcons for the Comoros tie and ensure Nigeria makes a strong start to its Olympic qualification campaign.

The winner over the two legs will advance in the African qualification process, with Nigeria targeting one of Africa’s available places at the Los Angeles 2028 women’s football tournament.

The Super Falcons will therefore begin preparations under Eguavoen with qualification for another Olympic Games now the team’s immediate priority.
