Edo Assembly Impeaches Suspended Speaker Eight Days After Resignation

The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he reportedly resigned from the position.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, had announced his resignation as Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2026, amid an ongoing dispute within the Assembly.

Following his reported resignation, Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was elected as the new Speaker.

However, at its sitting on Monday, the Assembly formally converted the disciplinary process against Agbebaku into an impeachment, maintaining that his resignation had not been officially presented and documented before the House.

Idaiye, who presided over the sitting, said the impeachment notice had been signed by 17 members of the Assembly.

According to him, the notice was formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s plenary.

He explained that Agbebaku’s indefinite suspension had subsequently been converted to impeachment because the former Speaker’s resignation letter had not been officially presented to and documented by the House.

Idaiye therefore stressed that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.

The motion seeking the formal impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central Constituency, Ahmed Waziri.

The development adds another layer to the political controversy surrounding the Edo Assembly, which had already suspended Agbebaku before the emergence of Idaiye as his replacement.

The new Speaker also directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession following his removal from office.

Idaiye warned that security agencies could be involved if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive.

“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye said.

He further stated that the impeached Speaker was required to return all government property in his possession.

The Assembly’s position effectively places the status of Agbebaku’s earlier resignation at the centre of the dispute, with the House insisting that the resignation was not formally recognised before the impeachment process was concluded.

The development is expected to generate further political and legal attention as questions remain over the circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s suspension, reported resignation and subsequent impeachment.
