Ebonyi PDP Slams Gov Nwifuru Over 2027 Threats, Demands Apology

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised Governor Francis Nwifuru over comments it described as threatening ahead of the 2027 general elections, demanding an immediate public apology.

The party said the governor’s remarks were unacceptable and capable of creating tension in the state’s political environment as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the elections.

The PDP expressed concern over what it described as statements suggesting that political opponents could face consequences if they challenged the governor’s administration or pursued alternative political interests in 2027.

The party urged Nwifuru to withdraw the remarks and apologise to Ebonyi residents, insisting that political leadership should promote democratic participation rather than intimidation.

According to the opposition party, the governor should recognise that citizens have constitutional rights to support political parties and candidates of their choice without fear or pressure.

The PDP also called on political actors across the state to avoid statements capable of escalating political tensions, particularly as preparations for the 2027 elections begin to gather momentum.

The controversy follows remarks attributed to Nwifuru during a political gathering in the state, where he reportedly spoke about the political consequences of opposing his administration.

The PDP interpreted the comments as a threat against opposition politicians and supporters, arguing that such language was inconsistent with democratic principles.

The party maintained that political differences should be settled through persuasion, campaigns and elections rather than threats or coercion.

It further called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to monitor political developments in Ebonyi and ensure that all political actors operate within the law.

The opposition party said the people of Ebonyi should be allowed to make independent political choices without interference from government officials or political groups.

The PDP also urged its members and supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, despite what it described as provocative political statements.

The party reiterated its commitment to participating in the 2027 elections and said it would continue to mobilise supporters across the state.

It said the democratic process must remain open to competition and that incumbency should not be used to suppress opposition voices.

The controversy adds to growing political tensions across several states as political parties and potential candidates position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Ebonyi PDP said it expected Governor Nwifuru to clarify his remarks and publicly apologise to residents if his statements were misunderstood.

It maintained that political leaders have a responsibility to promote peace, tolerance and respect for citizens’ democratic rights, particularly during election periods.

The party warned that threats or intimidation could undermine confidence in the electoral process and urged all stakeholders to prioritise peaceful political engagement.
