Ebola: Medical Laboratory Scientists Urge Virtual Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections
Medical laboratory scientists have called for virtual political campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections amid concerns over Ebola and public health safety.
Medical laboratory scientists have urged political parties and candidates preparing for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections to consider virtual campaigns and other technology-based forms of political engagement amid concerns over the reported Ebola case in the country.
The recommendation comes as Nigeria strengthens its public health response following the confirmation of a case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola virus disease, in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Federal Government announced on October 20 that laboratory tests had confirmed the infection in a woman who arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda. Health authorities subsequently began contact tracing, identifying 44 close contacts for monitoring.
Virtual campaigns could provide political parties with an alternative to large rallies, crowded political gatherings and other events involving extensive physical contact, while allowing candidates to communicate their programmes to voters through social media, livestreams and online town hall meetings.
Medical laboratory scientists play an important role in disease detection, diagnosis and outbreak surveillance. Their broader public health concerns include strengthening laboratory capacity, improving access to diagnostic services and ensuring that healthcare workers have the resources required to respond to infectious disease threats.
The Ebola development has also renewed attention to the need for transparent public communication, effective disease surveillance and compliance with guidance issued by health authorities.
However, any decision to change campaign arrangements would need to balance public health considerations with candidates’ ability to engage voters, particularly people in communities with limited internet access.
Nigeria’s 2027 elections are expected to generate extensive political mobilisation across the country. Virtual engagement could complement physical campaigning by providing additional channels for candidates to explain their policies and answer questions from citizens.
Political parties and election stakeholders will also need to ensure that online campaigns remain accessible, factual and inclusive, while avoiding misinformation about the outbreak.
As investigations and public health monitoring continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the confirmed case and the measures being taken to prevent possible transmission.
