Don’t Provoke Us Into Abandoning the Path of Law — Kwankwasiyya Warns Kano Govt

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has warned the Kano State Government against what it described as continued intimidation and harassment of opposition figures and supporters in the state.

The movement issued the warning in a statement by its spokesperson, Dr Habib Mai Lemo, amid growing political tensions between the state government and members of the opposition.

Kwankwasiyya accused the government of using administrative measures and other actions to target political opponents, critics and individuals associated with the movement.

The group alleged that the pattern included actions against opposition politicians, political commentators and development projects facilitated by lawmakers who are not aligned with the state government.

It also cited previous concerns over the reported suspension of local government councillors and attempts to halt or relocate some federal constituency projects.

The movement said political differences should be handled through established legal and democratic channels rather than through intimidation or administrative pressure.

It warned that continued actions against opposition figures could increase political tension in the state and undermine peaceful democratic engagement.

“Don’t provoke us into abandoning the path of law,” the group said, urging the government to exercise restraint and respect the rights of citizens and political opponents.

Kwankwasiyya maintained that members of the opposition had the constitutional right to participate in political activities, express their views and pursue projects for their constituencies.

The group also called on government officials to distinguish between legitimate political disagreement and activities that threaten public order.

The warning comes against the backdrop of wider political disputes in Kano involving the state government, opposition groups and supporters of former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The Kano State Government has previously maintained that its actions are based on the law and has warned political actors and other members of the public against actions capable of encouraging disobedience or disturbing public peace.

The government recently cautioned traditional rulers, politicians, religious leaders and community leaders against making statements or taking actions that could encourage people to disobey lawful directives.

Kwankwasiyya, however, urged the government to ensure that political disagreements do not become grounds for restricting legitimate opposition activities.

The movement said it remained committed to peaceful political engagement and the rule of law but expected the state government to adopt the same approach.

It called on political actors across Kano to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further deepen divisions in the state.

The group also urged residents to remain peaceful while using appropriate legal and democratic channels to challenge decisions they considered unfair or unlawful.
