Dolly Parton's First Posthumous Single 'Bound to Ride' Released Nearly Two Weeks After Her Death

Country music icon Dolly Parton's first posthumous song, "Bound to Ride," has been released nearly two weeks after her death, offering fans one more glimpse of the legendary vocalist's artistry.

The song was recorded back in 2022 as part of a tribute project honouring the influential bluegrass duo The Stanley Brothers, whose music shaped generations of country and bluegrass artists. Parton recorded her vocals for the traditional track as part of the album "Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of The Stanley Brothers."

The recording also features the First Ladies of Bluegrass, an all-female collective made up of several of the genre's leading musicians, including Alison Brown, Becky Buller, Sierra Hull, Missy Raines, and Molly Tuttle, bringing together some of bluegrass music's most respected instrumentalists and vocalists alongside Parton on the track.

Notably, the recording process for the album was adjusted due to health concerns during the COVID-19 period. While most of the project's songs were recorded live in the studio with the full ensemble present, Parton recorded her vocals separately, an arrangement that allowed her to contribute to the tribute album without risking her health at the time.

Garry West, bassist and owner of Compass Records, the label behind the tribute project, described Parton's performance on the track as exceptional, noting that she delivered a memorable contribution despite the unusual, separated recording process necessitated by the pandemic-era precautions.

The release of "Bound to Ride" marks the latest addition to a career spanning more than six decades, one that produced some of country music's most enduring and widely recognised songs, including "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," tracks that have cemented Parton's status as one of the genre's most influential and beloved figures worldwide.

Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, following what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death. Her sister, Stella Parton, later revealed that Dolly had deliberately kept her health struggles private in the lead-up to her passing, explaining that she did not want fans and family members to worry on her behalf. "She didn't want anybody to tell that because Dolly could not bear negative things and she would not have wanted her fans worried about it," Stella said.

Following news of her death, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry and beyond, reflecting the breadth of Parton's cultural influence over the course of her career. The release of "Bound to Ride" now gives fans a final new recording to add to that extensive legacy, one that captures her voice within a genre, bluegrass, closely tied to her Appalachian roots and the broader musical tradition from which her career first emerged.
